Scripture list from "Triumph of the Cross" message last week

Here's the Scripture that I went through on Sunday that you might have missed.

13 When you were dead in your sins and in the uncircumcision of your flesh, God made you alive with Christ. He forgave us all our sins,
14 having canceled the charge of our legal indebtedness, which stood against us and condemned us; he has taken it away, nailing it to the cross.
15 And having disarmed the powers and authorities, he made a public spectacle of them, triumphing over them by the cross.
Colossians 2:13-15 (NIV)

20 Therefore no one will be declared righteous in God’s sight by the works of the law; rather, through the law we become conscious of our sin.
Romans 3:20 (NIV)

7 What shall we say, then? Is the law sinful? Certainly not! Nevertheless, I would not have known what sin was had it not been for the law. For I would not have known what coveting really was if the law had not said, "You shall not covet."
Romans 7:7 (NIV)

But your iniquities have separated you from your God;
your sins have hidden his face from you, so that he will not hear.
Isaiah 59:2 (NIV)

20 For whoever keeps the whole law and yet stumbles at just one point is guilty of breaking all of it.
James 1:20 (NIV)

11 For I know the plans I have for you," declares the LORD, "plans to prosper you and not to harm you, plans to give you hope and a future.
Jeremiah 29:11 (NIV)

23 For the wages of sin is death,A)" data-cr="#cen-NIV-28092A">  but the gift of God is eternal lifeB)" data-cr="#cen-NIV-28092B">  ina]">  Christ Jesus our Lord.
Romans 6:23 (NIV)

9 In their hearts humans plan their course, but the LORD establishes their steps.
Proverbs 16:9 (NIV)

2…For the worshipers would have been cleansed once for all, and would no longer have felt guilty for their sins.
3 But those sacrifices are an annual reminder of sins.
4 It is impossible for the blood of bulls and goats to take away sins.
Hebrews 10:2-4 (NIV)

Jesus as the one sacrifice for all sins...
12  But when this priest had offered for all time one sacrifice for sins, he sat down at the right hand of God,
Hebrews 10:12 (NIV)

12  Therefore, just as sin entered the world through one man, and death through sin, and in this way death came to all people, because all sinned--
Romans 5:12 (NIV)

Followup to yesterday's sermon....my bad

Hey guys,

Every now and then, I realize that I start referring to Scripture that we don't put on the outline or on the screen, and I talk pretty fast or just breeze past the reference once and keep on going to the next thing.  One of the things I'm constantly working on is slowing down and I have over the years at Bay West, but I can fall back into habits periodically.  I apologize for that.

So, here's straight from my notes all the auxiliary Scripture that I referred to, but we didn't put on the screen.

In reference to no forgiveness of sin being given without the shedding of blood...
22 Indeed, under the law almost everything is purified with blood, and without the shedding of blood there is no forgiveness of sins.
Hebrews 9:22 (NIV)

In reference to one sacrifice, Jesus, paying the price for all sin...
14 For Christ’s love compels us, because we are convinced that one died for all, and therefore all died.
2 Corinthians 5:14 (NIV)

In reference to where wisdom begins...
10 1010  The fear of the Lord is the beginning of wisdom, and knowledge of the Holy One is understanding.
Proverbs 9:10 (NIV)

In reference to wisdom only coming from God...

About the Holy Spirit...

  • He is your teacher 26 But the Advocate, the Holy Spirit, whom the Father will send in my name, will teach you all things and will remind you of everything I have said to you.John 14:26 (NIV)
  • He helps you know the right thing from the wrong thing AND he will help you know the right thing to say...13 But when he, the Spirit of truth, comes, he will guide you into all the truth. He will not speak on his own; he will speak only what he hears, and he will tell you what is yet to come.John 16:13 (NIV) 15 For I will give you words and wisdom that none of your adversaries will be able to resist or contradict.Luke 21:15 (NIV)
  • He convicts us of sin...When he comes, he will prove the world to be in the wrong about sin and righteousness and judgment: about sin, because people do not believe in me; 10 about righteousness, because I am going to the Father, where you can see me no longer; 11 and about judgment, because the prince of this world now stands condemned.John 16:8-11 (NIV)

On Satan being our accuser, who tries to get believers to buy into condemnation...
10 Then I heard a loud voice in heaven say:
“Now have come the salvation and the power
and the kingdom of our God,    and the authority of his Messiah. For the accuser of our brothers and sisters,
who accuses them before our God day and night,    has been hurled down.Revelation 12:10 (NIV)

On God finishing and completing everything that He begins in you...
being confident of this, that he who began a good work in you will carry it on to completion until the day of Christ Jesus.
Philippians 1:6 (NIV)

On God giving us direction in ways only He can do...
21 Whether you turn to the right or to the left, your ears will hear a voice behind you, saying, “This is the way; walk in it.”
Isaiah 30:21 (NIV)

On our righteous deeds on our own being worthless...
6  All of us have become like one who is unclean,
    and all our righteous acts are like filthy rags;
we all shrivel up like a leaf,
and like the wind our sins sweep us away.

Isaiah 64:6 (NIV)

Once again, my bad.  Hope this helps...

In Christ,
Jim

P.S.  Here's a bonus.  I didn't refer to this one this morning, but I talked about the concept, but didn't mention the reference...
About God being the source of any real wisdom you hear...

20 He said, "May God be praised for ever and ever! He is wise and powerful. 21 He changes times and seasons. He sets up kings. He removes them from power. The wisdom of those who are wise comes from him. He gives knowledge to those who have understanding. 22 He explains deep and hidden things. He knows what happens in the darkest places. And where he is, everything is light. "Daniel 2:20-22 (NIRV)
